A fine quality scarce original King George VI period 'Princess Marys Royal Air Force Nursing Service gold brooch' depicting a 'caduceus' surmounted by a Kings's Crown enhanced with red enamel and applied to a slender bar, the reverse impressed "9ct" (9 carat gold). Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings with safety catch and housed in original retailers' velvet lined fitted leather case inscribed "By Appointment" "Gieves Ltd. 80 Piccadilly, London, W.1.". This in good clean condition. Width 45mm. Height 20mm. In Flight Magazine 17.10.1940 an advertisement cites 'Gieves Ltd 80 Piccadilly. W1' (late 21, Bond Street W1). It appears that on 16 September 1940 a high explosive bomb struck 'Gieves Ltd' and fire ignited when a gas main was damaged.
