| WW1 Royal Navy HMS Iolaire White Faced Rare Sweetheart Brooch This rare good quality gilt and enamel brooch for the ill fated Royal Navy Admiralty Yacht HMS Iolaire, who's loss on New Years day 1919 off the Minch Straight, would mark one of the worst maritime disasters in British waters. The brooch remains in very good condition, with bright gilt and the usual minor manufacturing flaws found with these brooches. Height 34mm
HMS Iolaire was an Admiralty Yacht on the 31st December she was tasked with the passage of ex sailors, who had served during the Great War to there homeland of the Isle of Lewis. At about 2.30 on the morning of the 1st January 1919 she struck rocks and of the 280 souls on board 205 lost their lives. |
